Off-Camera Flash – An Introduction – second Session

It’s really not necessary to have a lot of expensive equipment to shoot strikingly lit photos. Most of the time all you need is your camera’s built-in flash and one other light source, usually a inexpensive flash with variable output. Even using a small strobe without variable output can work with a little more work.

This class will introduce you to understanding how to balance using a second flash indoors and outdoors, with a fancy digital SLR or using a simple point & shoot with a built-in flash.

This is not rocket science although our fancy cameras and flashes have more computing power than the Apollo spacecraft. Getting good secondary, remote flash photos is a matter of balancing what you already have with what you will create. That puts you in charge. The technology become secondary to the content.

We’ll teach you have to understand the possibilities of off-camera, secondary flash.

Beginner’s Class – for Point & Shoots

Why do I need advanced degrees to operate my camera? I just want to take pictures!

This beginners class for Point & Shoot cameras is where we solve the crossword puzzle that is your camera.

Each clue solved will help reveal the intersecting clue to solve the problem of shooting better photos. Just to make things interesting, we think you already know the answers. It’s up to our instructors to help you match them with the right questions.

We’ll begin with explaining, in plain English, how the camera magically takes light and turns it into pixels, how pixels turn into computer files and how computer files make it to your phone or wallet.

This is a photo class so there will be lots of visuals, some hands-on demonstrations, several cameras to work with and real-time demonstration of how changing your camera setting affects the outcome.

You’ll leave the class with a better understanding of the mechanics of your camera. That knowledge will let you anticipate the results of shooting your subject in every type of light and at any speed of action.

Upgraded to a Digital SLR and need help?

This is a beginner’s class for people with a new Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. That’s a DSLR for the abbreviated crowd.

The cost difference between a high-end P&S camera and a DSLR is so narrow that some people move up to a digital single lens reflex camera with accessory lenses expecting there photo quality to increase exponentially. That’s not always true. A DSLR is more complex in a variety of ways.

Now you have to worry about depth-of-field, shutter speeds, focal length, flash-fill, RAW or JPG, and about 25 other minor and major aspects of better photos with a DSLR.

This is a class that will highlight the important things you need to know about your new camera, the less important things you can learn to worry about and the insignificant things that never need to be thought about.

Cost: $25

Composition, the Golden Ratio, 3 Dimensions & the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Now that you know an f-stop from the focal length and understand how ISO effects shutter speed, it’s time for you to learn the rules of composition, so you can break them.

The first thing you’ll learn is to take two steps forward before shooting almost every photo. That’s a freebie.

The next free lesson is take two steps back for the photos where you don’t take two steps forward.

Confused? That’s to be expected. Understanding composition can be as simple as taking two steps forward or two steps back. Understanding the Golden Ratio is a little more complex but not so complex that it’s beyond the grasp of a photographer. In fact, once you understand how every object in your photo contributes to its compositional success, you’ll begin to enjoy looking through the viewfinder exploring how each object relates to the other and how their arrangement contributes to making a better photo.

You’ll leave the class with confidence about simplifying your composition so your photos do a better job of telling the story of what you saw.
